FAQs regarding Extending Your Stay
Who can extend their stay from within Canada
If you are in Canada as a visitor, you can generally stay here for up to 6 months at a stretch. Sometimes, you may want to extend your stay without going back. IRCC allows visitors to apply for a “visitor record” from within Canada and extend their stay.
Similarly, you may be in Canada as a work permit holder and your work permit is about to expire. If you want to stay in Canada as a visitor, you can apply for “change of status”. If granted, you can stay in Canada as a visitor but can not work.
When should I apply for a visitor record?
It is important to apply for a visitor record before your current status expires. We recommend our clients apply at least 4-6 weeks before the expiry of their status so that their current status is valid by the time IRCC provides its decision on your visitor record application.
What happens if my status has already expired?
IRCC allows applicants to apply for a restoration of status or change of status up to 90 days after their current status expires. This is more expensive and not ideal, so we always recommend that the applicants keep a track of their status expiry and apply well before that.
